Qualification Assessment Process (QAP)

In order to be allowed to study AutTech at FAU, you’ll need to pass the Qualification Assessment Test. It comprises two components:

Formation of an overall score as a weighted average of the following criteria:

  • Overall grade of Abitur / secondary education qualification
  • Result of online test in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science (German Abitur level)

Outcome / Results: Applicants will not receive any interim results. They will only receive a decision once the qualification assessment process has been completed for them. There is no fixed timetable for this, as each application is assessed and processed individually.

Here you can find the regulations of the QAP:

Important information for international applicants

Please be aware that the secondary education qualification from your school in your home country does not necessarily entitle you to study at a German university. International applicants might have to take an assessment examination (Feststellungsprüfung) before they can be admitted. Information on the types of international university entrance qualifications and the type of access to university can be found here.

If you are not sure whether your educational background can be considered a University Entrance Qualification in Germany please visit the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). By stating your home country, and qualifications obtained there, and by answering some country-specific questions you can find out whether you are eligible to study in Germany.

Depending on your school-leaving qualification applicants from some countries might be required to have studied for one academic year as a full-time student at a recognised higher education institution according to the given study regulations. Please see the information for your individual school-leaving qualifications on the website of the DAAD.

FAQs

Please apply for the BSc AT via the application portal Campo. Follow the instructions there and upload all the necessary documents. Additionally, international applicants will have to send the application form that is generated for them in Campo by post to the Admissions Office. Other documents do not have to be sent by post.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit the required application documents in full and on time.

As soon as the status of your application changes, you will be informed via Campo and/or e-mail. Please refrain from inquiries and wait patiently for updates.

Applications will be possible from April 15.

International applicants can apply until July 15. Certificates that have not yet been issued by this date can be submitted by August 15 at the latest. Please note, however, that a decision on your application can only be made once the final documents have been received and checked. Conditional admissions will not be granted.

Applicants who have German citizenship and/or have obtained their university entrance qualification in Germany can apply until August 31. Please note: An IB diploma is considered an international university entrance qualification from Switzerland (regardless of the country in which it was obtained).

Applicants who have German citizenship and/or have obtained their university entrance qualification in Germany are considered to be domestic. Applicants who have neither German citizenship nor a university entrance qualification from Germany are considered internationals. Please note: An IB diploma is considered an international university entrance qualification from Switzerland (regardless of the country in which it was obtained).

If you can’t find or select the BSc AT in Campo, the application deadline has probably not yet started or has already passed. Please check the website for the application deadlines.

Once your application has been received, the BSc AT Admission Committee will review the documents that are relevant to them. You may receive an invitation to take the online test on the next possible date. In addition, international application documents must be checked by FAU Admissions Office. If all documents are in order, a decision will be made on your admission.

Please refrain from inquiries and wait patiently for updates. Everyone involved does what they can to process applications.

There is no fixed timetable for this, as each of the numerous applications is assessed and processed individually. Please refrain from inquiries and wait patiently for updates. Everyone involved does what they can to process applications. As FAU is a state university, the number of staff is limited. However, one of the great aspects of attending a state university is that students only have to pay a small semester contribution, while their excellent education at FAU is financed by tax revenue.

You can view the status of your application in Campo. The status of your application will change as soon as your application has been processed and the Qualification Assessment Process has been completed. Please also check your e-mails regularly.

Please refrain from inquiries and wait patiently for updates. Everyone involved does what they can to process applications.

No, there is no intake in the summer semester.

The application process is the same for all applicants and there is no intake in summer semesters. Even if you have already studied something similar, our recommendation would always be to apply for the first semester because of the preliminary examination = Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung/GOP, that has to be passed within the first semesters.

Applying with previously gained ECTS for a higher semester would shorten the time available to pass these exams and you would risk being exmatriculated. However, if you apply for the first semester and are accepted, you may be able to have previous achievements accredited one after the other, provided that the module content corresponds to the modules of the BSc AT. This will be checked on a case-by-case basis. Recognition is possible in any semester. Grades are converted into the German system.

Questions regarding language proficiency

For the BSc AT you need proof of proficiency in English at the level B1+ (CEFR), which means B1+ for language skills, B2 for reading skills. If you can’t provide separate proof of these two language skills, you will need a general proof of proficiency in English at level B2 (CEFR). We do not accept Medium of Instruction letters or similar. You can find information on the different types of proof we accept instead of the German university entrance qualification/HZB here. Your language certificate must still be valid at the time of application.

Yes, we do not accept Medium of Instruction letters or similar. You can find information on the different types of proof we accept instead of the German university entrance qualification/HZB here. Your language certificate must still be valid at the time of application.

Only native speakers from countries where English is the first and main official language (e.g. AU, CA, IR, NZ, USA, UK) don’t have to provide proof for their English skills. All other applicants need proof of proficiency in English. We do not accept Medium of Instruction letters or similar. You can find information on the different types of proof we accept instead of the German university entrance qualification/HZB here. Your language certificate must still be valid at the time of application.

For the application for the winter semester 25/26 no proof of German is required. This may change in the future.

Questions regarding the Qualification Assessment Process

No, there is no numerus clausus (NC), but there is a Qualification Assessment Process, where the university entrance qualification and the online test are taken into account. Both grades are converted into points and then added together. You must achieve a total of at least 140 points. Additional documents such as letters of recommendation, additional achievements or further education do not provide a bonus.

As the Qualification Assessment Process also takes the online test into account, the grades of those admitted are quite different.

Since the cohort that started studying in fall 2024 is the first, and also the Qualification Assessment Process has been changed for 2025, we can’t provide any meaningful numbers on the admission rate at the moment.

Once your application has been received, the BSc AT Admission Committee will review the documents that are relevant to them. You may receive an invitation to take the online test on the next possible date. In addition, grades from international certificates will be converted after their validity has been checked by FAU Admissions Office.

We have compiled FAQs specifically for the online test.

Questions regarding admission/rejection

No, there is no limit to the number of places and there are no different quotas for domestic and international applicants. All candidates who are deemed suitable after the Qualification Assessment Process are granted admission, all other applicants receive a rejection.

No, conditional or provisional admissions will not be granted. A decision on your application will only be made once the final documents have been received and checked. Late submissions can therefore lead to late admissions/rejections.

Yes, the BSc AT is an on-campus degree program. Classes begin mid-October, and a recommended but optional Welcome Week for international students is offered during the first week of October. Since moving to a foreign city/country and starting at a new university is very challenging and the first classes form an important basis for further studies, we recommend that our students come to Erlangen as early as possible.

We are aware that it can be difficult to obtain a visa in time and therefore grant our students Late Arrival until the end of October. As FAU is a brick and mortar university, we unfortunately cannot assume that students who arrive later will still successfully complete the semester. In this case, they would have to postpone the start of their studies.

The application process is the same for all applicants. If you already have a letter of admission for BSc AT at FAU from your previous application, please upload it to Campo together with the other relevant documents. The Admissions Committee will check whether it is still valid or whether you need to take part in the Qualification Assessment Process again.

“Temporarily excluded” means that your application was rejected – not only temporarily. This misleading wording is unfortunately due to the Campo platform. You are welcome to apply again next year.

Yes, applicants who have been rejected can repeat the Qualification Assessment Process one more time. However, they must wait for next year’s application period.

General questions regarding the admission test

In order to be admitted to the BSc AT, you have to pass a Qualification Assessment Process, which includes an online test. This is to ensure that applicants can prove that they meet the special qualitative requirements of the degree program and have the skills that are expected to lead to a successful course of study.

During the Qualification Assessment Process the university entrance qualification and the online test are taken into account. Both grades are converted into points and then added together. You must achieve a total of at least 140 points to be admitted. Additional documents such as letters of recommendation, additional achievements or further education do not provide a bonus.

All those who wish to be admitted to the BSc AT, have to pass a Qualification Assessment Process, which includes an online test. You will receive an invitation to take the online test as soon as your application has been received and the BSc AT Admission Committee has reviewed the documents that are relevant to them.

If you passed the Qualification Assessment Process in a previous year, but didn’t enroll at that time, you should upload your letter of admission for BSc AT at FAU together with the other application documents to Campo. The BSc AT Admissions Committee will check whether the letter of admission is still valid or whether you need to take part in the Qualification Assessment Process and the online test again. If you receive an invitation you need to take the test again.

Please note: The offer of admission is only valid as long as no significant changes are made to the statutes of the Qualification Assessment Process or the examination regulations.

Each applicant can only take the test once during the application phase.

Anyone who does not pass the Qualification Assessment Process can apply a second time for BSc AT in a later year and take the test again. More than these two attempts are not possible.

No, every applicant only gets one shot at the test. Once you start the test, you have only that chance to complete it. It is not possible to cancel the test and retry later. Similarly, it is not possible to take the test again on a later date to improve your result.

If you attempt to take the test more than once, this will be considered cheating and your application will be rejected.

However, the offer of admission is only valid as long as no significant changes are made to the statutes of the Qualification Assessment Process or the examination regulations.

You will not get a second chance once you have started the test, even if you don’t answer any questions and cancel immediately.

Failure to take the test will result in the application being rejected.

If you are found to have cheated, your application will be rejected.

The admission test is designed to ensure that an applicant has a chance of successfully completing their studies. The first year of study at a German university’s Faculty of Engineering is very demanding, with drop-out rates in engineering and mathematical sciences between 30 and 40 percent. The online test should therefore also be seen as a means of self-assessment. If you can’t solve these tasks yourself and try to cheat on this test, there’s a good chance you’ll just waste time and money but won’t graduate.

Exceptions to the application process are not possible due to the large number of applications and the equal treatment of all applicants.

There is no option to reset your data. Instead, you will have to register anew and make sure to remember your login properly this time. Do not try to take the test more than once, as this will be considered fraud and your application will be rejected.

The test is only available for one hour. Please remember that the time in the invitation e-mail corresponds to Central European Summer Time. This may differ from your time zone.

Yes, probably excluding the question you were currently working on when time ran out.

It means that you can’t restart the test (every applicant only gets one attempt). Don’t worry, your previous answers were saved.

Questions regarding results

You will not get any direct feedback on how well you did in the test or receive interim results. The results will be made available to the BSc AT Admissions Committee, and they will take it into account according to the statutes on the Qualification Assessment Process: Both your university entrance grade and your test grade are converted into points and then added together. You must achieve a total of at least 140 points to be admitted.

You can view the status of your application in Campo. The status of your application will change as soon as your application has been processed and the Qualification Assessment Process has been completed. Please also check your e-mails regularly.

Please refrain from inquiries and wait patiently for updates. Everyone involved does what they can to process applications.

No, applicants will not receive any interim results. They will only receive a decision once the qualification assessment process has been completed for them. There is no fixed timetable for this, as each application is assessed and processed individually.

To a certain extent, a lower grade in the admission test can be compensated for by a good grade in the university entrance qualification and vice versa.

As the Qualification Assessment Process also takes the university entrance qualification into account, the grades/points of those admitted can vary.

Both grades are converted into points and then added together. You must achieve a total of at least 140 points to be admitted. Detailed information as well as the conversion scales can be found in the statutes on the Qualification Assessment Process (= Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren/EFV).
